Running with Soul: Meet Sara (#2)

Featured Runner : Sara

Little bit about you:
I'm a California girl, living in Missouri! I moved out here to be with my boyfriend and attend Missouri State University. It was hard but the best decision of my life! I'm one semester away from my obtaining my BS in Exercise and Movement Science. I have two dogs here, one dog back home. I'm a huge Packers fan and have been to Lambeau Field twice. I love to cook and have a serious addiction to Starbucks.

How many years have you been running?
In my school years, I HATED running. I was overweight and slow and running, as for most kids, was used as a punishment by PE teachers. Don't even get me started on that soapbox...  I ran my first 10K in 2011 after I began losing weight, mostly to prove that I COULD. And then I didn't run another race until 2012! I have been consistently running since early 2012, so about two years.

Who or what inspires you to run?
I'm self-motivated and inspire myself. I want to see myself get better, be faster, run farther. I want to inspire others. There is nothing more fulfilling than to hear someone say they are on a fitness journey, whatever type of journey that may be, because of YOU.

What is your running mantra?
Don't weaken! I got that from my Dad at a young age. It applies to so many areas of my life, especially running.

What is your favorite running/fitness blog?
I'm a HUGE fan of Olive to Run! .

What has been your most memorable race?
They've all been memorable for different reasons, some good, and some bad. I think the Republic Tiger Tri has been my most memorable and favorite. My first (and so far only) triathlon it was a completely different environment and SO thrilling. The race emcee was amazing, there was a cannonball challenge when people got in the pool, and the course marshals were great. I had an amazing time. And I placed fifth in my age group! Looking for a medal next year, now knowing how it works.

What is your dream race (besides Boston)?
The San Luis Obispo Marathon. I have yet to run a marathon and I am bound and determined for this, my hometown marathon, to be my first, tentatively for 2015. I believe it's also a BQ :)

What are you currently training for?
I just ran my second half marathon on November 3rd so NOTHING! It's a nice feeling. My next half is scheduled for April and I'm toying with a destination half for Rock n Roll DC in March.

What one piece of running gear can you not live without?
Just one?! Headband. Probably sounds weird but they hold my earbuds in place, keep my ears warm and the sweat out of my eyes. And they're fun!! I have so many different prints, though the fading on my "bright" green Missouri State Bears shows that it is my clear favorite.

If you could share any words of advice/encouragement to a new runner, what would it be?
My running mantra: don't weaken. You absolutely can do this. Everyone had to start somewhere, you are no different. Set yourself an achievable goal and MEET IT. So many people you don't even know are rooting for you.

Thank you so much Sara! I am right there with you, my first marathon is planned for 2015 in Texas! You are a perfect example of why I am sharing this series. I want to help others get motivated when everything seems impossible. The sky is the limit you merely need the courage to believe in yourself! Keep motivating us all Sara!

Be sure to check back each week, as another runner shares their story of running with soul.

Happy Running!
