Running with Soul: Meet Lauren (#5)

Featured Runner: Lauren

Lauren from Breathe Deeply and Smile

How many years have you been running?

I've been running races for about 2 years.

Little bit about yourself:

Hi! I'm a twenty-something living in Charm City, Baltimore. Besides running and trying to eat some greens every day, I love nut butters, desserts, and breakfast food. I am also a panda bear enthusiast and shopaholic. I love nothing better than lazy weekend mornings with a hot cup of coffee and stack of pancakes.

Who or what inspires you to run?

I honestly love the journey of a run-it's my therapy. There can be so many ups and downs or bad runs, but there is nothing like that amazing feeling you get after a great run. I sometimes can't believe what I've accomplished in such little time and can't wait to see what else my body and mind can do!

What is your running mantra?

I tell myself to BREATHE a lot (hence the blog title). Also, my other mantra I actually tell myself when I run is "You can do this. You are strong."

What is your favorite running/fitness blog?

Some of the first blogs I read were Dorothy from Mile Posts and Janae from Hungry Runner Girl. Janae is hilarious and so fun to read. Dorothy is an inspiring runner, and I dream of her race times!

What has been your most memorable race?

I feel like a broken record but my most recent race-the full marathon has been really memorable. Also the Nike Women's Half DC I ran last year was really emotional for me and getting my goal time and PR, giving a high-five to Shalane Flanagan at the finish line, and hearing my friends screaming for me was priceless.

What is your dream race? (Besides Boston)

I like that you said besides Boston :) I would love to do something huge like the London Marathon or something so unique like Big Sur.

What are you currently training for?

I just ran my first full marathon last month (yay me!) so now I'm in a bit of a transition and gearing up to run some half marathons in the spring including the Rock and Roll DC half, Philly Love Run Half and Nike Women's DC Half.

What one piece of running gear can you not live without?

Besides shoes I'm comfortable in (I run in Brooks!), I'd have to say my compression sleeves and socks. They are great for long runs and then post run I wear them all day!

If you could share any words of advice/encouragement to a new runner, what would it be?

I would say to keep training and pushing yourself, but run because you love it. If you love it, all the tough runs will be worth it!

Be sure to follow Lauren on her running journey:

Thank you so much Lauren! First off, CONGRATS on your first marathon! I am super jealous about your Shalane high five, but I digress! Your mantra is on point. During runs, I find myself panicking for whatever reason and let every pain get the better of me. I have to remember I am strong. We are strong!

Be sure to check back each week, as another runner shares their story of running with soul.

Happy Running!
