Running with Soul: Meet Emily (#3)

Featured Runner: Emily

How many years have you been running?

One seriously/forever on and off

Little bit about yourself:

I'm an energetic twenty-something who started running just for the heck of it without the gear or goals, as it turns out I love it so now I do have the gear and the goals. I'll be running my first marathon April 2014 and look forward to completing Ironman Wisconsin in September 2015! Outside of the fit life I love to read, write (hence TSP) and eat! I am vegan but that doesn't stop me! This is my first real year racing so I am looking forward to getting quite under my belt in 2014.

Who or what inspires you to run?

I'm inspired to run by my step mom who has defeated breast cancer and is in consistent turmoil with T1 diabetes but has never given an inch. More internally I run to see just how far I can make it, I miss the unadulterated passion I had as a child and running has given that back.

What is your running mantra?

Just keep going, it's the least you can do. I know so many people who have either overcome or are overcoming much larger obstacles than my mind saying "I want to stop" that I feel like keeping true to running is truthfully the absolute least thing I can do.
I also love to remember that we all have our own Ironman. Ironman is my end goal but it is just as large of a cornerstone than someone whose goal is to make it down the block. If you run, you are a runner, period.

What is your favorite running/fitness blog?

My own, ha. I am also a fan of Angela at Oh She Glows (vegan food blog) and Brandon at Forks to Feet (vegan athlete blog).

What has been your most memorable race?

I did a 30 mile hike for Cystic Fibrosis this past September and it was awe-inspiring to hike with afflicted athletes, families, and friends!

What is your dream race? (Besides Boston)

I'm vying for the Otter African Trail Run, my goal is to race in Africa and I'd love to a part of this one specifically!

What are you currently training for?

Short term I have the Go! Saint Louis marathon in April 2014 but will start training in December for Ironman Wisconsin, September 2015.

What one piece of running gear can you not live without?

My RoadID ankle ID, it's reflective and God forbid anything happen I would be identifiable.

If you could share any words of advice/encouragement to a new runner, what would it be?

Don't be ashamed of your pace, we all start somewhere. Be proud you've started. Atypical - it's okay to hate running. Secretly we all do at some point.

Be sure to follow Emily on her journey:

Thank you so much Emily!  Good luck on your marathon training and upcoming marathon in April. I will be tackling my first marathon in April 2015, which means winter training. Any advice?

Be sure to check back each week, as another runner shares their story of running with soul.

Happy Running!
